Knowing Yourself

Career development process starts by evaluating who you are as a person. Knowing and Understanding yourself is the first step in finding a best fit for a satisfying career. It gives you more choices and raises your confidence that you are on the right career track. There are five dimensions of self that should guide your career decisions: your values, interests, personality, Leisure, and skills. When exploring the five dimensions of self, you will be empowered to identify the ingredients of a good “career fit” and to decide which career path is right for you. This a crucial step in the career planning process and your career advisor will help you every step of the way.

This involves taking a personal assessments of individual personality, values, interests, leisure  and skills to help you to answer the critical question of “who am I?”  To help you learn more about yourself, The Career Development Center can assist students in identifying relevant personal characteristics that are key in finding suitable future work options and careers.

Get to know yourself

  • Take self and personality assessments FOCUS 2
  • Meet with a career coach for help with assessments and early planning
  • Begin to identify career fields and/or academic programs that fit your interests and abilities 
  • Create a draft resume and have a career coach review it

During this stage, you may consider asking yourself:

  • What’s important to me?
  • What do I like to do in my free time?
  • What activities make me lose track of time?
  • What are the most interesting jobs and careers I can think of?
  • If I could do anything in this world and money was no object, what would I do?
